The 2012 Niagara Food and Wine Expo is arriving soon at the Scotiabank Convention Centre. This four day event will take place the weekend after Victoria day, May 25th to May 28th 2012. The quality of Niagara on the Lake meets the luxury of Niagara Falls as Niagara vinters put out their best wine. This global event attracts visitors from California, France, South Africa, and every other major wine producing part of the world to see how high the Canadians set the bar this time.

According to the event planners the Niagara Food & Wine Expo is “a premier international tasting event featuring wines, beers and spirits from around the globe”. According to the guests it is the first taste of things to come. According to me it is the best way to start the summer.

Regional wines from neighbouring vineyards are a real highlight, but the culinary arts in Niagara make this event an example of perfection. Delicious wine servings will be paired with fresh food prepared by local world class restaurants. Niagara has the highest number of formally trained chefs per capita in Canada, and every major chef will be on site.

Nik Wallenda Niagara Falls Tightrope Event

Now that the Niagara Parks Commision is allowing Nik Wallenda to enjoy the splendor of Niagara Falls while adding to the enjoyment of other visitors he will bring back the tight-rope experience to Niagara Falls in a one time only high wire act.

Unravelling a History of Danger
“Other daredevils have made crossing the falls their goal, starting with the successful passage by Jean François “Blondin” Gravelet in 1859. These tightrope walkers drew huge crowds to witness their exploits. Their wires ran across the gorge, near the current Rainbow Bridge, not over the waterfall itself. Among the many was Ontario’s William Hunt, who billed himself as “The Great Farini” and competed with Blondin in performing outrageous stunts over the gorge. Unstoppable Wrath of Nature
Niagara Falls is my favourite places in the world  and should be yours too. It is the only place where you are guaranteed to see the wrath nature. Nik Wallenda is coming to Niagara Falls to conquer the natural danger, with high winds and an unstoppable flow of power it may be his greatest challenge.

I enjoy that he is bringing back the daredevil culture and with the blessings of the Niagara Parks Comission our natural spaces will be safe for ecotourism and thrill seekers alike. Professional daredevils, back to stay.

Unmissable 2012 Events
This is a big deal and many of the biggest players in Niagara Falls are saying this will be one of the three biggest events in Niagara alongside the War of 1812 Memorials and major concerts coming to the region. There is never a bad time to visit Niagara Falls, but for the truest thrill seekers this would be a bad time not to visit. The only thing that could push this over the top would be a visit by Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Family.

30th Annual Winter Festival of Lights

Okay so I may be a little early on this one, but next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the Winter Festival of Lights. – Canada’s largest lights festival. Did you get to enjoy the 29th annual Winter Festival of Lights activities this year? The festival is full of family friendly activities starting November and ending usually January 31.  The Rink at the Brink was my favourite winter attraction this 2011-2012 season.

I will keep you posted on the 30th annual event (starting November 3, 2012) as I am sure the festival will include something a little extra to mark the anniversary.

Carol Burnett is an American actress, singer, dancer and writer. Starting her career in New York, Carol became a hit on Broadway and then made her television debut on the Garry Moore Show. In 1967 Carol began an eleven-year run on the comedy sketch show, The Carol Burnett Show.

Peller Estates Icewine Experience

I visited Peller Estates for their icewine experience, and I wasn’t disappointed. They served two different kinds of icewine, followed by large marshmallows which were also infused with icewine. The icewine was fantastic – I particularly enjoyed their Vidal, which was their sweetest offering. After the wine, we were able to roast marshmallows over an open fire. The marshmallow was messy, but was one of the most delicious things I’ve ever tasted. Between the Lines Winery – An Underdog Story

On Sunday I had the opportunity to attend the Ice Wine festivities in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This week I’ll be discussing the experiences I had at some of the wineries in the area.

First I want to share my thoughts on a relatively new winery called Between the Lines. The story of this winery was really inspiring to me because it shows that new business ventures have the ability to compete with the established wineries. Between the Lines was created by two brothers from Germany, only two years ago. Within a short period of time, they were able to grow a vineyard, produce high quality wine and icewine, and market the brand under a memorable name. Despite the fact that they only started actually selling the wine a year ago, I had already bought a bottle a few months back and recognized their name as soon as I saw it. It was great to be able to try their icewine, which held up well against the top-tiered brands in Niagara. They also let me try some delicious white and dark chocolate truffles, which were infused with their icewine.

Their biggest challenge seems to be space – the winery equipment and barrels are packed into a very small area, and I get the sense they will need to expand very soon due to their increasing demand. From talking to the brothers, I’m convinced that they’re up to the challenge, and their passion for wine making is definitely evident in the final product.
