Nikolas Wallenda. Born January 24, 1979 in Sarasota, Florida. A proud father of 3. Some would say he looks like your “everyday man”, but he certainly doesn’t act like it.

No “everyday man” that I know would be confirmed to walk on a tightrope over Niagara Falls on June 15. The news was finally confirmed during a press conference this morning as Wallenda made the official statement from Niagara Falls.

Luckily, Wallenda has some practice. He has been making his living by performing extremely risky highrise daredevil stunts since he can remember. It was at the age of 4 when Nik’s family had him start practicing on a tightrope. Since then, he has grown to be a world-renowned performer. Currently, Wallenda and his wife Erendira own and operate Wallendas Inc, an entertainment company that puts on thrill shows across the globe. He and his wife also perform at Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. But currently, Nik has his focus set on conquering the huge feat of walking across the incredible wonder of the world, the mighty Niagara Falls.

Where is the best place to watch this once-in-a-lifetime event, you ask? The Marriott Fallsview Hotel and Marriott Gateway Hotel have the best views. The war of 1812 events are going to be widespread across the Niagara Region on both the Canadian and American sides of the border. Luckily the 1812 bicentennial committee has an amazing events calendar on their new website Discover1812.

While some of the biggest events in Niagara Falls will occur on the anniversary of the death of General Isaac Brock in October there are persistent nature and history tours through the summer.

The Willoughby Museum will open their 1812 exhibition in May of 2012. The Declaration of War dinner will take place in June 2012 and will be well attended by the local experts and re-enactors. There will be a naval exhibition in Niagara on the Lake in July.

Of course soon enough you will hear about the amazing plans that the 1812 bicentennial committee hasn’t added to their public calendar. Many people can learn about the War of 1812 in a book, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn through experience about the dark period in North American history.

The War of 1812 situated in time between the American Revolution that liberated New England from colonial rule and the American Civil War which fortified the American identity. The War of 1812 is also one of the few conflicts that involved the Canadians and is the only war fought on Canadian land, albeit prior to confederation in the nineteenth century.

Even if history lessons aren’t your idea of a fun vacation the roar of cannons, music of fife and drum bands, or nineteenth century fashions may be just the excitement that you have been missing.

While nobody knows exactly what will happen in the future it is easy to see the trends. Niagara Falls is experiencing a renaissance. This rediscovery could last for years and will bring in new ideas while weeding our the less than successful remnants of the past.

New Boats in Niagara Falls
The excitement regarding the potential new boats continues. It is the beginning of a wave of change that appears to be sweeping up Clifton Hill. Even Casino Niagara is looking primed for renovation. New hybrid boats are the first domino in a coming era of growth.

New Hotels in Niagara Falls
The urban sprawl into the pristine farmland of Niagara has ended, with newer and taller hotels in the Fallsview Boulevard area. Most of these hotels have been filling up and filling out, with vertical expansions.

New Hours for Niagara Falls
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Niagara Falls is a 24-hour operation. Coffee at 3am kind of operations have been popping up. Starbucks is available at every major Fallsview Hotel, and the newest operation is in the renovated Marriott Gateway on the Falls.

In the meanwhile there will be plenty of new deals and small events. Come see the best of Old Niagara Falls before it disappears.

I wrote earlier this month about the businesses participating in Earth Hour 2012 and the Marriott Hotel Fallsview and Marriott Gateway on the Falls Hotel in Niagara Falls want to commit to participating for the fourth year in a row.

This gutsy move will be the first year that the Earth Hour lands on a Saturday. The busiest day of the week for a high profile hotel, and they remain committed to raising awareness.

No service interruptions will occur due to the Earth Hour Celebrations, in fact it may be the best time for a romantic dinner at their restaurant. Milestones Niagara Falls will remain open, with their free parking, for anyone looking to have a candlelit dinner.
