BREAKING NEWS: Nik Wallenda CONFIRMED to tightrope walk over the Falls on June 15

Nik Wallenda tightrope walk Niagara FallsNikolas Wallenda. Born January 24, 1979 in Sarasota, Florida. A proud father of 3. Some would say he looks like your “everyday man”, but he certainly doesn’t act like it.

No “everyday man” that I know would be confirmed to walk on a tightrope over Niagara Falls on June 15. The news was finally confirmed during a press conference this morning as Wallenda made the official statement from Niagara Falls.

Luckily, Wallenda has some practice. He has been making his living by performing extremely risky highrise daredevil stunts since he can remember. It was at the age of 4 when Nik’s family had him start practicing on a tightrope. Since then, he has grown to be a world-renowned performer. Currently, Wallenda and his wife Erendira own and operate Wallendas Inc, an entertainment company that puts on thrill shows across the globe. He and his wife also perform at Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. But currently, Nik has his focus set on conquering the huge feat of walking across the incredible wonder of the world, the mighty Niagara Falls.

Where is the best place to watch this once-in-a-lifetime event, you ask? The Marriott Fallsview Hotel and Marriott Gateway Hotel have the best views. Or, you can watch it from the comfort of your own home — Just visit WallendaCam.com to see a live hi res online video feed of the Falls. The camera will still be rolling on June 15 to capture the historic event, so be sure to visit back.

Superheroes at Niagara Falls Comic Con

Dragoncon Gotham Sirens by asylum-countess

Gotham Sirens by asylum-countess

Niagara Falls Comic Con 2012 is almost here and the number of people that haven’t heard about the event in Niagara is down to zero. The largest convention centre in Niagara Falls is going to be filled with artists, cosplay enthusiasts, and run of the mill comic book aficionados. There will be something for everyone.

This is another summer of superheroes in the box office and even though Batman is at the cinema the original Robin going to be at the convention centre in Niagara Falls. It’s important to remember how far these comic book universes have come in the last century, and you get to experience it in person.

The anticipation is building as announcements surrounding new science fiction and animated programs for television. Comic books are continuing to make the transition from page to screen and if you want to see the net big thing before it gets the movie treatment your best choice is a comic book.

Speaking of screens, bring in your tablets and be among the first to get you tablets signed by your favourite celebrities. During the event there will be plenty of ways to connect with artists and publishers digitally and make a lasting connection to the artists community.

War of 1812 Events in Niagara Falls

The war of 1812 events are going to be widespread across the Niagara Region on both the Canadian and American sides of the border. Luckily the 1812 bicentennial committee has an amazing events calendar on their new website Discover1812.

While some of the biggest events in Niagara Falls will occur on the anniversary of the death of General Isaac Brock in October there are persistent nature and history tours through the summer.

The Willoughby Museum will open their 1812 exhibition in May of 2012. The Declaration of War dinner will take place in June 2012 and will be well attended by the local experts and re-enactors. There will be a naval exhibition in Niagara on the Lake in July.

Of course soon enough you will hear about the amazing plans that the 1812 bicentennial committee hasn’t added to their public calendar. Many people can learn about the War of 1812 in a book, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn through experience about the dark period in North American history.

The War of 1812 situated in time between the American Revolution that liberated New England from colonial rule and the American Civil War which fortified the American identity. The War of 1812 is also one of the few conflicts that involved the Canadians and is the only war fought on Canadian land, albeit prior to confederation in the nineteenth century.

Even if history lessons aren’t your idea of a fun vacation the roar of cannons, music of fife and drum bands, or nineteenth century fashions may be just the excitement that you have been missing.

The Amazing Kreskin at the Greg Frewin Theatre

The Amazing Kreskin in Niagara Falls 2012By the age of five, during early childhood games, Kreskin’s remarkable ability to find hidden objects emerged. This fascinating and unusual gift made him stand out amongst his peers, forcing him to assume the role of omniscient observer. From this point of view, Kreskin was able to harness and refined his gift. By his teens, he was nationally recognized as The World’s Youngest Hypnotist allowing him to collaborate in psychological clinical studies existing in the realm of Parapsychology and the Power of Suggestion. See him live and interactive and maybe have your questions about past, present or future answered on this very special evening.

The Future of Niagara Falls

While nobody knows exactly what will happen in the future it is easy to see the trends. Niagara Falls is experiencing a renaissance. This rediscovery could last for years and will bring in new ideas while weeding our the less than successful remnants of the past.

New Boats in Niagara Falls
The excitement regarding the potential new boats continues. It is the beginning of a wave of change that appears to be sweeping up Clifton Hill. Even Casino Niagara is looking primed for renovation. New hybrid boats are the first domino in a coming era of growth.

New Hotels in Niagara Falls
The urban sprawl into the pristine farmland of Niagara has ended, with newer and taller hotels in the Fallsview Boulevard area. Most of these hotels have been filling up and filling out, with vertical expansions.

New Hours for Niagara Falls
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Niagara Falls is a 24-hour operation. Coffee at 3am kind of operations have been popping up. Starbucks is available at every major Fallsview Hotel, and the newest operation is in the renovated Marriott Gateway on the Falls.

In the meanwhile there will be plenty of new deals and small events. Come see the best of Old Niagara Falls before it disappears.

Starbucks in Niagara Falls

Best Starbucks in Niagara Falls

If dollars were votes Starbucks would be voted most popular Coffee in the Fallsview Boulevard area. There are more Starbucks locations than Tim Hortons locations. Unlike Tim Hortons the prices do vary so I’m here with some tips for the coffee connoisseur.

Best Fallsview Starbucks for Couples and Desserts
The Fallsview Starbucks at the Marriott Fallsview Hotel and Spa is my favourite date cafe. When someone asks if I want to go for coffee this location comes to mind. Walking distance from all of the major hotels on Fallsview Boulevard it is the closest to the falls.

Best Fallsview Starbucks for your Technology
The Starbucks at the Marriott Gateway on the Falls is nestled in their new lobby, and as usual you do not need to be a guest to pop in for coffee and a quick read of your rss feed. Business pros and permanently connected teens are both comfortable at the plug-in tables in front of the largest indoor television on Fallsview boulevard.

Best Fallsview Starbucks for Value
I’d love to highlight the competitive prices at the Fallsview Casino Starbucks, which are roughly the same as the Gateway Starbucks or Fallsview Starbucks. Unfortunately the value is lost because the Starbucks at the casino isn’t truly a Fallsview cafe, in fact it barely sees the light of day on the north side of the parking garage. The best value is at the Gateway on the Falls, combining great prices, a great view, and great lobby amenities.

There are at least five other cafe locations that come to mind, and you’re welcome to try them as I have. There are many cafes like them but these are my favourites. I have seen their strengths, their frappucinos, their pastries, and their coffee. ‘Coffee in Niagara falls’ is just ‘coffee’ if you can’t see Niagara Falls.

Marriott Commits to Earth Hour 2012

OliverBruchez Earth Hour 2012 ArticleI wrote earlier this month about the businesses participating in Earth Hour 2012 and the Marriott Hotel Fallsview and Marriott Gateway on the Falls Hotel in Niagara Falls want to commit to participating for the fourth year in a row.

According to their website: “The Marriott Gateway on the Falls has participated in Earth Hour, and looks forward to building on last year’s success. With the flip of a switch, we’ll help raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.”

This gutsy move will be the first year that the Earth Hour lands on a Saturday. The busiest day of the week for a high profile hotel, and they remain committed to raising awareness.

No service interruptions will occur due to the Earth Hour Celebrations, in fact it may be the best time for a romantic dinner at their restaurant. Milestones Niagara Falls will remain open, with their free parking, for anyone looking to have a candlelit dinner.
